There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is illegal. Eight casinos are established in a generally tiny space in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime area, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The astonishing income acquired from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a number of restrictions constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are allegedly required to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The original Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling hall, features 150 slot machine games and 60 tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slots and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-around resort and hotel compound that highlights numerous comforts aside from the gambling den, which has ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
