There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is not legal. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a relatively small space in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime area, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; however, financial sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 17:00, and though visas are allegedly required to cross, there are ways around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The first Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat casino, contains one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat banque, 4 tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of 150 slot machines and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slots and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred slots and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and 66 of the common table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a comprehensive resort and hotel compound that features a number of conveniences accompanying the gambling hall, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight table games.
