There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is banned. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime location, a 3 to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The amazing income gained from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a number of limitations constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; although, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and even though visas are supposedly needed to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The original Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge gambling hall, features 150 one armed bandits and sixty gaming tables. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slots and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel complex that contains many comforts accompanying the gambling den, which provides ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight tables.
