There is an interesting story to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where gambling den wagering is against the law. Eight casinos are based in a relatively small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect destination, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; however, financial sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 17:00, and even though visas are allegedly required to pass, there are methods around this, as is true of many border crossings.

The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling den, highlights one hundred and fifty slots and sixty gaming tables. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and 66 of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel building that contains numerous luxuries accompanying the casino, which contains ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight tables.
