There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that reside just over the border from next door Thailand, where casino gambling is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are established in a generally tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime destination, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal capital gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; still, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are allegedly required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked ship gambling den, features 150 slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel compound that highlights many comforts in addition to the gambling hall, which offers ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machines and eighty eight tables.
