There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the border from nearby Thailand, where gambling den gambling is banned. Eight gambling dens are situated in a relatively small space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect destination, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; however, financial sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and even though visas are supposedly required to pass, there are means around this, as is true of most borders.
The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only 1 gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge gambling hall, highlights one hundred and fifty slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga gambling hall never closes with forty two tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 one armed bandits and 70 gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six table games, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight casinos in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational vacation and hotel complex that contains numerous conveniences accompanying the casino, which houses ten thousand square feet of 130 one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
